El-Jem and Sousse tour
Chauffeur-driven private car overnight excursion
On this short excursion from Hammamet discover Sousse, the “lovely pearl of the Sahel” and El-Jem, one of the best preserved Roman monuments in Africa.
In Sousse, the third largest city in Tunisia, you will visit the Medina, Kasbah and the ‘Ribat’ (fort) from which, after a steep climb up a narrow spiral staircase to the tower, there are splendid views of the Medina and port.
Sightseeing in Port El Kantoui, a purpose built resort with quality hotels, golf courses and lovely beaches, located 10 kilometres north of Sousse. Designed in traditional Tunisian style, the resort is made up of brilliant white buildings and set around a pretty marina. Overnight in Sousse.
Next day you drive south to El-Jem, which at one time was amongst the richest towns in Roman Africa. Here, around the year 200, the Romans built a grandiose collosseum, second only in size to that of Rome itself. At the time it was the scene of cruelty, but today it provides a magnificent venue for performing arts.
On your return journey to Hammamet you visit Monastir. The monastery after which the town was named, was built by an Islamic religious order in 797. It’s fortress houses a museum of Islamic art and artefacts.
