Cradle of the Renaissance

The fun food for kids is gelato ice cream. Florence lays claim to the invention of gelato by Bernardo Buontalenti, who made it for the Medicis.

Florence offers an enormous variety of shopping. The main shopping area is between the Duomo and the Arno River, with boutiques concentrated along Via Roma, Via dei Calzaiuoli and Via Porta Santa Maria, leading to the goldsmiths lining Ponte Vecchio. Florence’s famed leather goods can be found in the city’s markets.
